Virgil Lee Rogers, 91, passed away on October 7, 2025, in Clarksburg, WV. A native of Grafton, WV, he was born on July 8, 1934 to Charles and Dulcie Rogers and lived a life marked by service, creativity, and generosity.
Virgil graduated from Grafton High School, Class of 1952 and went on to enlist in the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 22 years before retiring. During his distinguished military career, Virgil served aboard ship in Japan, Phillipines, and various Mediterranean countries. He was stationed for extended periods in California, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. His final duty station was supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. His duties included camera repair and flight reconnaissance photography, including processing still photographs taken during the early Apollo moon missions. Among his notable assignments included the White House photo lab during the term of President John F. Kennedy, photographing official activities of the president and his family.
Following his retirement from the United States Navy, Virgil embarked on a second career as an educator. After graduating from Fairmont State College specializing in history and social studies, he was an educator at Grafton High School and Suncrest Junior High School. During his 20-year tenure as a teacher and mentor, he touched the lives of many students with his patience and dedication.
Photography remained a lifelong passion for Virgil. Beyond his military service, he became an avid photographer and expanded his talents into wedding and portrait photography. Later in life, he turned his lens toward nature and landscape subjects.
In addition to photography, Virgil found joy in woodworking. He crafted countless gifts over the years - each one a testament to his thoughtfulness and skill. Whether behind a camera or at a workbench, Virgil approached every endeavor with care and a desire to bring happiness to others.
He was known for being caring and giving - always ready to lend a hand when needed. A loving husband and father, Virgil's legacy is one of kindness, craftsmanship, and quiet strength.
He is survived by his spouse, Marian F. Withers Rogers of Grafton, WV; William A. Rogers, Ph.D. and spouse Monica D. (Willis) Rogers of Moatsville, WV; Charles F. Rogers of McConnelsville, OH as well as Bethany A. (Rogers) Cazenave, MD and spouse Craig R. Cazenave, MD of Santa Rosa Beach, FL.

A Graveside service will be held 1:00PM, Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at the West Virginia National Cemetery with Chaplain Randy Jennings officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the US Navy Honor Guard and the Taylor County Honor Guard.
