Toby Kisner Obituary

Toby Shawn Kisner, 45, of Grafton, WV, unexpectedly passed from this world into eternal light and peace on October 28, 2021. He was born in Fairmont, WV on November 24, 1975, to Ansel “Skip” and Dorothy “Dottie” Kisner of Grafton, WV.

Toby will be deeply missed by his parents, his daughter, Marisa Lyn Kisner, of Menominee, MI; his older sister, Tonya Kisner Cynn of Boston, MA and her two children, Isaac and Isla Cynn; and younger sister Chanda Kisner Cotter of Greensboro, NC and her two sons, Cole Epperson and Ansel Cotter. Toby will also be greatly missed by his constant companion, Mister, his Italian Greyhound. In addition, he leaves behind the following aunts and uncles:  Michael and Kathy Kisner of Grafton, WV; Robert and Sheila Kisner of Fairmont, WV; William Carroll of Milan, IL; Franklin and Patricia Carroll of Moline, IL; and his ‘aunt and uncle’ Linda and Ray Vallorani of Grafton, WV; and many cousins. Toby was preceded in death by grandparents Ansel “Dowdy” and Betty Kisner of Grafton, WV; Mary Hardman of Grafton, WV; Ruhl Fisher of Buckhannon, WV; and Uncle Damon and Aunt Ronda Kisner of Williamson, GA.

Toby, aka the “Plant Whisperer”, was an avid gardener who could nurture a dying sprig into a thriving plant using his perfected homemade compost soil. He loved to make good dirt. His favorite plants were lion tail, oopsie daisy, stevia, snake plant, and huckleberry, as well as his vegetable and herb gardens. He was a self-taught beekeeper whose golden amber honey was loved by many. Toby was a devoted caretaker to his animals including two American Pekin ducks, Betty (lovingly named after his Grandmother Kisner whom he loved deeply) and Jake, who provided many entertaining moments. He was open minded with a sensitive soul and tender heart. His bookshelves were filled, including many works by his favorite science fiction author, Orson Scott Card. He had a distinct connection to the sixties and it showed with his many tie-dye shirts and beautiful long hair. Toby liked to explore new music and listen to various podcasts on topics involving mysteries of the universe. He wrote poems and short writings. He always started and ended his day with a cup of tea, and his pantry was filled with dozens of blends. Family was most important to Toby. He loved when everyone came home to WV to visit and especially introducing his niece and nephews to his love of nature. His last few years have been his happiest. Toby will be forever missed by his loving family who take comfort in knowing he is finally at peace.
