Richard (Dick) Hyson Obituary

Richard (Dick) Lee Hyson, son of Charles Henry Hyson and Katherine Winifred Mayo Hyson, died Sunday, December 27, 2020, in Winchester VA.  He was born July 4, 1939, in Elkins, WV, and is survived by his wife of 57 years, Iris Davis Hyson.

A self-proclaimed clothes horse, Dick was a very funny and fun guy who will be missed by many far and wide.  He attended East End Grade School, Grafton Junior High School, and graduated from Grafton High School in 1957. He worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD, then moved to Washington, DC, in 1961.  After a decade in banking, Dick became a real estate broker in DC and MD.  He owned the Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD, for 15 years and served on the Board of Directors of the Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce.  He was a member of the DC Air National Guard 1962-1968, a period of the Vietnam Era which included both the Cuban Missile Crisis and the seizure of the USS Pueblo by North Korea.  At the time of his death, Dick had been a member of the American Legion for 48 years, and was a Life Member of the Jamestown Society, being a direct descendant of Dr. John Woodson who came to Jamestown, VA, in 1619.  In retirement, Dick volunteered over 17,000 hours at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. The Hyson’s moved from the DC area to Winchester in 2014.

In addition to his devoted wife, Dick is survived by one brother, James Robert Hyson. Also surviving are Hyson nieces and nephews Anna Marie Holdforth (Vern), Kathy Dare Lowery, Patricia Lynn Butler (John), Jaimi Buckley (Graeme), Raycine Hyson, Joyce Fisher, Frances Whitehair, Tammy Hyson, Donald Lowery (Laura), David Whitehair (Rod), Robert Lee Hyson (Rebecca), Brian Hyson (Kym), Fred Whitehair (Cari), and Chris Hyson. Additionally, surviving are 30+ younger Hyson nieces and nephews, and a special cousin, Jo Ann Kelleher.

Surviving members of his wife’s family are sisters-in-law, Virginia Ellis and Jean Davis; nieces Leslie Newlon (Dave), Kimberly Toothman (Allen), and Kelly Burns (Crist); nephews, Michael Edward Ellis (Mickey) and Kevin Davis; and several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Sarah and Ryan with whom he was especially close.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by sisters Nancy Lowery and Marie Phelps, brother Raymond Hyson, niece Nancy Lee Hyson-Houghton, nephew Russell Hyson, and his wife’s parents Maude and Paul Davis.

Following one last trip on those country roads over the mountains to his West Virginia home, a private burial took place in The West Virginia National Cemetery at Grafton.

For anyone wishing to make a memorial donation, Dick’s favorite charities were The American Cancer Society, The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and Veterans’ organizations.
