Richard Lea Swieter, 78 of Springfield, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at Mt. Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, Va. He was born August 24, 1947 in Grafton, WV., son of the late Kenneth L. and Mary Louise Withers Swieter.
Richard continued his education after graduating from high school, earning both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He went on to build a long and dedicated career as a contractor supervisor for the Navy, where he served faithfully for over thirty years.
Outside of his work, Richard found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved putting puzzles together and cheering on his favorite football and basketball teams. One of his greatest passions was researching his family’s genealogy, taking pride in learning about and preserving the history of those who came before him.
Richard had a deep appreciation for the quiet beauty of the world around him. He found peace in watching the sunrise and sunset each day and enjoyed observing wildlife and birds in their natural surroundings. These small moments brought him happiness and reflection.
Richard was a simple man with a big heart, someone who found meaning in life’s little things and whose kindness and gentle spirit will always be remembered.
Richard is survived by one, sister Karen L. McCall; three brothers, Gary E. Swieter, Mark G. Swieter (Evelyn), and Don S. Swieter; nieces and nephews, Kenny Swieter, Whitney Lamb (Brendan),Ryan McCall, Greg Swieter (Liz), Stephanie Taugher (Alex); great nieces and nephews; Whitney’s children, Brenn and Will, Greg’s children, Lucas and Cora, Stephanie’s children, Tyler, Logan and Sasha.
A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at the Bluemont Cemetery, 123 Bluemont Street, Grafton, West Virginia with Pastor Jimmy Johnson officiating.
