Mark Alan Henderson passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. After a brave three-year battle against cancer, he departed this life during a season when families journey home and reunite with their loved ones.
Mark came into this world on June 8, 1958, and from his earliest days, he distinguished himself by hard work and forthright honesty. He graduated from Harrison County’s Washington Irving High School in 1976. Over the following decades, he worked alongside his family to build a successful construction business, and, most importantly, created memories of a kindhearted man taken from his loved ones far too soon. He devoted his professional life to City Window Construction, which eventually grew to be one of the largest construction companies in West Virginia. Mark was a strong believer in personal responsibility and proud of always maintaining his integrity. On New Year’s Eve in 1999, he met his future wife, Patricia, and immediately knew they would travel life’s journey together. They married in 2005 and spent many happy years grateful for one another.
Shortly after retiring in 2020, Mark was diagnosed with cancer. Despite facing an illness that would leave many embittered or defeated, Mark never voiced a complaint about his circumstances. He understood every hour was a gift, and that we should strive to be remembered for the small acts of kindness that uplift humanity. He remained a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Grafton and took comfort in the prayers of others. Each day of his fight was punctuated by visits and cards from family and friends, all of whom let him know he was loved and lived a life worth admiring.
Despite the treatments he endured, Mark’s spirit never wavered. As his illness progressed, Mark spoke more frequently of the hereafter. Mark knew Christ’s passion had redeemed him and eventually that faithful covenant would reunite him with his loved ones. He was grateful for every reward life tendered him, and when he passed, he went gently and without fear.
With his passing, Mark leaves a legacy crowned by the family he so deeply cherished. Among his survivors are his wife, Patricia A. Henderson; his daughter, Olivia Colvin (Justin) and Raycheal Henderson; his son, Mark A. Henderson, Jr.; his stepsons, Robert Lee Bolton III and Nathan Philip Bolton; his mother, Mary Janet Henderson; his siblings, Brian Henderson, Scott Henderson (Krista), Janet Childers (Billy), Bud Henderson (Joan), Ron Henderson (Lorrie), and Patricia Green (Chris); his grandsons, Triston Richards and Landon Riegel; his granddaughters, Ryleigh Richards, Montana Riegel, and Abigail Colvin; and a multitude of beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Oral Eli Henderson, Jr.; his sisters, Barbara Mayer (John) and Mary Henderson; and his brother, David Henderson.
Visitation hours will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 12:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Avenue, Grafton, W.Va. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church, 2034 Webster Pike, Rte. 119-S, Grafton, W.Va., on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation hours to precede from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Reverend Orville G. Wright will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow thereafter at Bluemont Cemetery in Grafton, W.Va.
