Karen McConnell Hyde

Karen McConnell Hyde passed away on July 25, 2021 at her Pleasant Creek home in Philippi, WV.

Born September 9, 1943 to Benjamin Franklin and Vivian Thomas McConnell, she grew up in Terra Alta, WV. She graduated from West Virginia University in 1965, later completing an M.A. at WVU in 1991.

On June 25, 1965, she married John Francis Hyde. Residing in Morgantown, WV, the couple had two daughters, Elizabeth Hyde and Emily Hyde Skiles. The family moved to their farm on Pleasant Creek in 1971 where they raised sheep and cows and built the Hyde’s Greenhouse business.

 All the while, she taught in the Barbour County public school system, first at Century Elementary School, then Philippi Elementary School, and ultimately at Philippi Middle School where she taught 6th grade science until her retirement in 2002.

She is survived by her husband, John Francis Hyde; daughters Elizabeth Hyde, and her children Meredith Hyde Boyle and Lauren Hyde Boyle; and Emily Hyde Skiles, her husband Jeffrey Skiles and children Caroline Skiles, John Morgan Skiles, and Wren Skiles; as well as her siblings Mary Dawn McConnell Milne and Thomas Rightly McConnell.

A Memorial Service will he held at our home 1404 Upper Pleasant Creek RD, Philippi, WV. at 2:00 PM  August 14, 2021
