John “Jocko” Darl Shingleton Jr., 78 of Lakeland FL, formerly of Grafton was greeted by the Angels as he entered into the door of his Heavenly home on Sunday, November 10, 2024. He was born May 18, 1946 in Grafton, son of the late John Darl Sr. and Esthel Hebb Shingleton. Jocko is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Sonya Collins Shingleton whom he married on December 24, 1971, spending more than fifty-two years together.
Jocko was a proud veteran of the US Army and was a trackman for Chessie Railroad until he retired. He was a member of the Long Run Fellowship Church. Jocko was active in whatever church he attended as he traveled and was away from home. He enjoyed singing and going to gospel sings to enjoy fellowship in song. Jocko really liked going camping and sitting around the campfire, especially with his camping buddies; Andy and Bernetta Saltis, Linda and Mike Westfall, Jim and Paulette Knotts, Bob and Frances Colebank, Barb and Dale Estel. He loved his family unconditionally and enjoyed all the times spent with each of them while making great memories to be shared.
In addition to his wife Jocko is survived by one son, John Darl Shingleton III (Terry); one daughter, Crystal Shingleton (Pat); four grandchildren, Samatha Jennings (J.J.), J.J. Shingleton, Mikayla Sheets, and Colt Sheets.; great grandson, Jesse Walker Jennings; one sister, Barbara Isner (Jerry); one brother, Bill Shingleton, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents Jocko is preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie Shingleton and Robert Shingleton.
Family and friends will be received at Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave., Grafton on Sunday, November 17, 2024 from 12:00PM until 6:00PM and on Monday, November 18, 2024 from 9:00AM until 12:00PM the hour of the funeral with Pastor Samuel Myers officiating. Interment will follow at West Virginia National Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the US Army Honor Guard, Camp Dawson, and the Taylor County Honor Guard.
