John Francis Hyde

John Francis Hyde passed away on July 8, 2025, in Morgantown, WV.

Born August 31, 1942, in Connellsville, PA to Ernest Frederick Hyde and Erma Clarissa Honse Hyde, he grew up in Fayette and Greene Counties in Pennsylvania.  He graduated with a B.S. in Agriculture from West Virginia University, followed by an M.S. in Horticulture in 1967. 

On June 25, 1965, he married Karen McConnell. Residing in Morgantown, WV, the couple had two daughters, Elizabeth Hyde and Emily Hyde Skiles.  The family moved to Barbour County in 1971.

John worked and conducted research at the WVU Orchards and served as the grower for commercial greenhouses dedicated to tomato production in Flemington, WV, but on moving to Pleasant Creek, spent the next 54 years farming the land there and raising sheep and cattle. With his wife, Karen, he also built the Hyde’s Greenhouse business; operating out of Belington, WV, and then from the farm on Pleasant Creek, they raised bedding plants and vegetable plants for the retail and wholesale trade.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Karen McConnell Hyde.  He is survived by daughter Elizabeth Hyde and her children Meredith Hyde Boyle and Lauren Hyde Boyle; daughter Emily Hyde Skiles and her husband Jeffrey Skiles and children Caroline Skiles, John Morgan Skiles, and Wren Skiles; as well as his brother E. Frederick Hyde (and his children Rebecca and James), sister-in-law Dawn McConnell Milne (and her husband David Milne), and brother-in-law Thomas R. McConnell (and his children Callee, Mac, and Molly).

A Memorial Service will be held at our home at 1404 Upper Pleasant Creek Road, Philippi, WV at 2 PM on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
