Harold "Ed" Edward Heavner, 85 of Grafton, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at the Taylor Health Care Center, Grafton, He was born in Frenchton, WV. Upshur County, on November 29, 1939, son of the late Clark Rosco and Vera Muriel Reed Heavner, Ed was preceded in death by his wife Violet Dale Fitzwater Heavner, July 8, 2024.
Ed was a graduate of Flemington High School, Class of 1958 and went onto college at the University of Maryland receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. He was a proud veteran of the US Army retiring with twenty-four years of service. Ed had a second retirement from the Pittsburg Corps of Engineers with twenty-one years of Civil Service. He was a Life member of USAWOA, United States Army Warrant Officers Assoc, and the MOAA, Military Officers Assoc. of America. Ed attended and was a Deacon at the Blueville Church of Christ, and was a World Bible School Teacher. He was very proud of his accomplishment in 2006 walking the Appalachian Trial in West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania and also the Allegheny Trail in West Virginia. Ed never knew a stranger, always had a story to tell and liked to make others laugh. He loved his family more than words can say and loved all the time he spent with each of them.
Ed is survived by daughter, Melissa Heavner O’Neil (Bill); step son, Kenneth C. Gifford III, two grandchildren, William “Billy” O’Neil, Kristen O’Neil; two sisters, Kathryn Dunbar, Edith Garner (John); one brother, Stephen Franklin Heavner (Dee), several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ed is preceded in death by three sisters, Betty McCourt, Margaret Dotson, Helen Marlene Keener, two brothers, Darrel Heavner and Marion “Gene” Heavner.
Family and friends will be received at Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave., Grafton on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 3PM to 7PM and Sunday, March 23, 2025 from noon to 2PM the hour of the service with Pastor Jeff Tucker officiating. Graveside Service will be on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the West Virginia National Cemetery with full Military Honors accorded by the US Army Camp Dawson Honor Guard and the Taylor County Honor Guard.
