George Ray Hershman, 87, of Grafton, passed away peacefully at his home on Wickwire Road, Friday, December 19, 2025. He was born in Grafton, West Virginia, May 15, 1938, a beloved son of the late Cecil Ray and Virginia Isabelle Martin Hershman.
George was the devoted husband of Wilma L. Smith Hershman. The two were united in marriage on February 10, 1984, and shared more than forty-one years of love, companionship, and cherished memories together.
A proud graduate of Grafton High School, Class of 1956, George dedicated his working life to the CSX Railroad, retiring after 40 years, 10 months, and 19 days of faithful service in management. He was a member of the Elks, VFW, and the Strand Pool Room, places where friendships were formed and stories were shared.
George found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed smoking a good cigar, playing cards, working crossword puzzles, and relaxing with a cold beer. In his small woodshop, he took pride in building picture frames, creating keepsakes that reflected his patience and craftsmanship. He loved spending time outdoors hunting and especially treasured the moments spent surrounded by family and friends, who were the true center of his life.
George is survived by his loving wife, Wilma Hershman; one son, George Scott Hershman (Mitzi); two grandsons, Ryan Scott Hershman (Scarlett) and George Lucas (Sydney)Hershman five stepchildren, Sherry L. Matthews (Jason), Christina Flohr (Douglas), Candace Jill Warash (Anthony), Gregory Scott Boyce (Jenny), and Mark Alan Boyce (Lori); and two great grandchildren, Forrest William and Georgia June Hershman; eleven step-grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; a special friend, Steve Wagner “Noodle”.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by one stepson, Michael David Boyce; one brother, Carl Hershman; and two sisters, Louise Hickman and Virginia Robinson; stepson-in law, Anthony Warash; stepdaughter in-law, Gloria Boyce.
George will be remembered for his dedication, quiet strength, and the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
