He held the hand of his beloved bride, Phyllis June Dodd Lancaster, whom he married on October 9, 1955. The couple shared more than 70 years together.
Francis was born September 25, 1933, to the late Elsie R. Lancaster and Martha B. Richards Martin in Harrison County, W.Va. He was the youngest of four sons.
Also surviving, are one son, Scott Lancaster (Elizabeth) of Porterwood, W.Va., one daughter Jill Boyles (Mark) of Grafton, W.Va., son in law; Ronald Moran, Jr. of Grafton, W.Va. and ten grandchildren, Kari Bennett, Kati Hooper, Heidi Boyles, Emily Erdie (Chris), Luke Boyles (Jada), Danielle Moore (Andrew), Sabreena Weaver (Justin), Raven Carmichael, Jacob Wilson Lancaster, and Hannah Evans (Logan). He was also blessed with 23 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless special friends and neighbors he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents: brothers, Richard, Robert, and Jesse Lancaster; sister, Peggy Minear; brothers and sisters in law, Patrica and Clare Butcher and Dale and Bettie Dodd; and his precious daughters, Kim Wagner and Betsy Moran.
Francis was always a hard worker. His first job at age six was shoveling snow for his neighbors. He was a graduate of Lost Creek High School in the Class of 1951. He was the only one of his siblings to graduate high school and served in the Army for two years. He made a career as a railroad operator. He had the opportunity to enjoy retirement for longer than he worked.
Francis enjoyed woodworking and completing indoor and outdoor projects at his home. He loved to mow the lawn and spent countless hours tending to his garden and his beautiful flower bed. His flowers were admired by the whole community. He planted trees and flowers and voluntarily mowed neighboring properties for over 30 years. He enjoyed performing his chores and always kept his property immaculate. He enjoyed filling the Blessing Box near his home for many years and was always willing to lend a hand. He would do anything for anyone and never wanted recognition.
He always took great care of his cats, Smokey and Lucky. Lucky blessed the family with kittens the day he passed. He loved taking care of his treasured wife, Phyllis, and always made sure she never had to lift a finger or learn to use the washer.
Francis was known for his quick wit. He wrote many silly poems and would dress up to make his family laugh. He and Phyllis loved to create silly videos for Facebook. He enjoyed spending time with his family. The pride and joy of his life were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Known as “Crazy Papaw” by his great grandchildren, he loved spoiling, playing, singing, and running around with them. He loved to bake and decorate special cakes for each birthday. His smile lit up the room anytime they were around.
Francis was a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His life left an impact on all who knew him. He will be missed greatly. His family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice, especially Amy Turner, Pastor Julie Davis, and everyone for the prayers and outpouring love during this difficult time. Francis never wanted to be the center of attention, thus his wish to be cremated and to not have a funeral service will be honored. Memorial donations should be made to the Taylor County Humane Society, PO Box 4045, Grafton, WV 26354.
