Fannie Garrett Obituary

Fannie Garrett was born Fannie Flora Ivy of Cedarbluff in Clay County Mississippi.  She was born to Virgil Lee and Maudie Ivy on April 28, 1937 at 6:00pm.  Born to sharecroppers, Fannie and her family moved to Chicago for a better life in 1946.  In Chicago, Fannie flourished attending college while working.  She eventually joined the US army in the 1950s.

While in the Army, she met and fell in love with Ben Garrett, of Grafton West Virginia.  The two married in Washington County, Maryland on August 23rd, 1959.   Fannie and Ben had four children Brian Garrett (Grafton, WV), Mildred Stubbs (Chicago, Illinois), Virgil Garrett (Chicago, Illinois) and Ben Garrett Jr. (Chicago, Illinois). 

The family lived first in Chicago and then West Virginia where Fannie worked for AT&T eventually becoming the first Black female president of the local.  After a lengthy career at AT&T, Fannie and her family moved back to Chicago where she started careers in telemarketing and real estate eventually owning two successful businesses.  In 2007, Fannie and Ben retired to West Virginia.

Fannie F. Garrett passed away peacefully on April 2,2019  at 5:07pm at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown West Virginia.

Fannie is preceded in Death by her mother Maudie and father Virgil; her brothers Howard, Virgil, Curtis, and Jessie Ivy; and her sister Dora Ivy.  She is survived by her husband Ben Garrett Sr.; her sisters Annabelle, Susie, Delores, Virginia, and Mattie Ivy; her children Brian (Crystal) Garrett, Mildred Stubbs, Virgil (Patricia) Garrett, and Ben Garrett Jr; and by four grandchildren Allen Garrett, Janelle Stubbs, Julian Stubbs Jr., and Camrin Garrett; as well as countless cousins and nephews. 

Friends may call at Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave., on Thursday, April 18, 2019 2-8PM., Funeral  services will be held on Friday, April 19, 2019. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Memorial City Post #3081, American Legion Taylor County Post # 12, Centeral WV DAV24 and their auxiliaries, and the honor guard from Camp Dawson.
