Evelyn “June” J. Matthews, age 87, of Grafton, WV, passed away on May 9, 2026. She was born on May 9, 1939, to the late Ellery C. and Lillian C. (Holmes) Brown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald T. Matthews; her sister, Christine Fumich; and her brother, Clark Brown. She is survived by her three children: Pamela Lynn Dalton-Arlotti of Morgantown, WV; Sandra Jo (Walter) Hassenpflug of Morgantown, WV; and William Bradley (Noreen) Fleming of Grafton, WV. She is also survived by her grandchildren: McKenzie Fleming, Elizabeth Haderman, Jessica Matala, and Kristin Richardson; 10 great-grandchildren; her niece, Linda Watson; and her nephew, Roger Brown.
Evelyn was a graduate of Morgantown High School. She worked as a clerk typist for Rockwell International/Sterling Faucet and Warsinsky Decorators.
Evelyn found joy in the simple and meaningful things: her family, a good book, cooking for those she loved, and the companionship of her beloved cat, Scrapper. She always had a book to read, and at 87, she could use an iPad better than most young people.
Evelyn’s greatest joy was spending time with family. As her children and grandchildren grew up, started their own families, and moved near and far, everyone always found their way back to her table for Sunday dinners, birthdays, and holidays.
To say she was deeply beloved would be an understatement. Evelyn had a quiet gift for making people feel safe, seen, loved, and understood. She was patient without being passive, direct without being harsh, and loving in a way that left no doubt. Through her wisdom, traditions, stories, cooking, and treasured recipes, she taught her family about life, love, resilience, and belonging. Her presence shaped the generations who loved her, and her legacy will continue to live on in the family she held so closely.
In honoring her wishes, there will be no funeral services. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.bartlettfuneralhomewv.com.
