Elizabeth Lewis Obituary

Elizabeth Dale Fleming Lewis, 102, passed away at UVA Prince William Medical Center, Manassas, Virginia on December 21, 2022 with friends and family sharing her
last moments.

Elizabeth was born in Fairmont, WV on December 13, 1920 to the late Fred and Bessie Fleming. She was the only daughter of three children, and fondly spoke of her formative
years in Fairmont. She was preceded in death by her younger brothers, Howard Elmer Fleming and William Lawson Fleming. Elizabeth outlived her husband of 59 years,
James, who died in 2007. She is survived by son James Lewis, Jr. (wife Gay), and daughters Barbara Green, Karen Lyddane (husband Denis) and Elizabeth “Betty”
Masters (husband Steve). Elizabeth’s grandchildren include Sheryl Gatz (husband Chris), Stephanie Masters (husband Channing), Colin Masters, Patrick Green (wife
Basia), and Sarah Green. Five great grandchildren also survive Elizabeth.

Elizabeth always knew she’d be a nurse. She graduated from nursing school at Fairmont State and proudly served in our U.S. army during WWII as a 1st Lt. aboard the
hospital ship Emily H. M. Weder in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. Survivor of at least two bombings at sea, Elizabeth was awarded the Silver Star twice. Her call of duty
reached to the Anzio beachhead, Crete, Naples, Rome, European-Africa-Little Eastern and the Philippines. She saw Sicily (where she dined with Gen. Patton), Naples-Foggia,
New Guinea, and the southern Philippines. Her service continued the rest of her life via patriotic talks in local schools and participating in Honor Flight programs, Veteran’s Day
parades, etc. In recognition, a military service dog, “Lizzie” was named in her honor.

Elizabeth was instantly embraced by everyone. She was a strong Christian with an unbounded enthusiasm for just “doing the right thing.” She was also an avid sports fan,
particularly rooting for anything WVA university related. The annual Army vs. Navy football game held special meaning in her heart. While on her deathbed, she inquired
about the recent matchup and when informed that Army had won, she smiled. A caring mother and faithful wife, Elizabeth was a treasure and role model for the entire family.
She will rest with her husband at West Virginia National Cemetery, Grafton, WVA, following a private funeral service, as she had wished. Bartlett Funeral Home is handling the local arrangements and honored to serve the Lewis family.  Online condolences can be made at www.bartlettfuneralhomewv.com.
