Donald Lee Pratt, age 88, of Thornton, WV, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 13, 2025, surrounded by love and memories. Born June 20, 1937, he was the son of the late Arley Pratt and Sara Elizabeth (Pyles) Pratt. He is now reunited with his beloved wife of 56 years, Freda J. (Constable) Pratt, who passed away on November 23, 2012.
A proud graduate of Grafton High School and a dedicated patriot, Donald served honorably in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1964, including tours in Korea and Vietnam. After his military service, he continued to serve and protect as a police officer for the city of Alexandria, VA, for nine years — seven and a half of those years as a skilled and devoted K-9 handler.
Together with his wife, Donald embraced entrepreneurship, owning and operating the Ivandale Supper Club in Grafton for over eight years and later D&J Auto Sales in Augusta, WV, for nearly two decades. Through hard work and shared dreams, they built a life that touched many.
Donald was a proud member of VFW Post 3081 in Grafton and carried a deep respect for the brotherhood and sacrifices of fellow veterans. His unwavering dedication to country, family, and community will forever be remembered.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family — a quiet testament to a life well-lived and deeply rooted in love, service, and strength.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Brenda L. Newbraugh of Thornton; his devoted companion and dear friend, Kathy Clemens; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren — each a part of his legacy and love. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his stories, his strength, and his steady presence.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his two sons, Jeffery L. Pratt (1980) and Rodney L. Pratt (2000); one granddaughter, Shelly Newbraugh; three brothers, Dorsey, Charles, and Howard Pratt; and five sisters, Wilma J. Martin, Nellie Cochran, Ruth Pitman, Bettie DeLaney, and Anna M. Liston.
A graveside service honoring Donald’s life and military service will be held at the West Virginia National Cemetery on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with Chaplain Randy Jennings officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Taylor County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, in recognition of his faithful service.
