Donald Dale Hershman, 77, of Thornton, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 13, 1948, in Grafton, the son of the late William “Bill” Jennings and Ruth Estella Hall Hershman. Donald was preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Elaine Shumaker Hershman who passed on June 27, 2025.
Donald lived a life filled with simple joys, hard work, and love for those around him. Right after graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After his military service, he worked in maintenance and later retired from the Pfizer Company, where his strong work ethic and dedication were well known.
A true outdoorsman, Donald found peace in nature. He loved spending time hunting, fishing, and simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the world around him. He had a gift for conversation and never met a stranger—his easy smile and kind heart made everyone feel welcome. Donald appreciated the little things in life and found happiness in moments others might overlook.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, George and Barbara Shingleton; three special nieces and nephews, Heather Frye (John) of Moatsville, George Shingleton II (Emily) of Nashville, and Simon (Amanda) of Grafton; and ten special great-nieces and nephews, Olivia, Isaiah, Josiah, Micah, Maleah, Caleb, Colton, Warren, Wade, and Emma. Donald also leaves behind many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Robey, Patricia Chapel, and Wanda Murphy, and two brothers, Bobby Hershman and Jimmy Hershman.
Family and friends will be received at Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave., Grafton, on Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM, and again on Monday, November 10, 2025, from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, the hour of the funeral, with Pastor Jimmy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery, with full military honors accorded by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the Taylor County Honor Guard.
