Charles "Charlie" Patterson Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Alfred Patterson, age 96 years, passed away peacefully at his home on May 27, 2023. He was born on May 9, 1927 in Grafton, Taylor County, WV a son of the late Robert M. Patterson Sr. and Jamie B. Grow Patterson. On December 28, 1948 he was united in marriage in Tunnelton, WV to the love of his life, former Florence Mae Kelley, they made a wonderful life together for 68 lovely years until her death on May 20, 2018.

Charles is survived by his beloved son, Charles A. Patterson Jr. and wife Diana, and one grandson, that he mentored and cherished, Charles A. Patterson Ill, all of Grafton. Charles was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved life and had a deep feeling for his loved ones, his neighbors, friends, and fellow man.

Charles was known by many in the community as an electronic and electricity wizard. His talents were massive, and well known in the Grafton area, whether it was; locksmithing, carpentry, metal lathing, auto mechanic repair, television & radio repair, he seemed to have the innate abilities to start and finish projects in a professional matter. He worked on the Baltimore & Ohio R.R, which later became known as Chessie R.R., then CSX. as a locomotive electrician for many years, and retired with a loyal and dedicated service award from this Railroad on June 9, 1988 after 43yrs.

In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert M. "PeeWee" Patterson, five sisters, Annabelle Patterson Satterfield, Mary Jo Patterson Slaton, Frances Patterson Gamsjager, Betty Patterson, and Helen Patterson.

Charles acquired his primary and secondary education at St. Augustine Catholic School in Grafton, where he completed his education after 11 years of education in 1945. On Oct. 31, 1945 he enlisted in the United State Army, he served in Austria, Germany, and France at the end of World War Il. He served his country faithfully, honorably and with distinction. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

As requested by Charles, there will be no funeral service. A private interment will be in the Bluemont Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Charles may be made to the Taylor County Humane Society, PO Box 243 Grafton, WV 26354.
