Brenda Kay Thompson, 79, of Grafton, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her community and veterans.
Born on October 8, 1946, in Salem, West Virginia, Brenda was the beloved daughter of the late John and Edna Glaspell Nery. She was also preceded in death by her devoted husband, Leeland Thompson; her cherished son, Nicholas Thompson; and her sister, Sarah Sue Steele.
Brenda leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and countless friends whose lives were forever changed by her kindness, strength, and generous spirit. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol Hinton; her niece, Maryanne Goodwin and husband Thomas, along with their children, Noel and Chloe; and her nephew, Westley Hinton and wife Leslie, and their daughters, Audrey and Ann. Brenda also leaves behind numerous dear friends who were blessed by her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering love throughout the years.
Brenda was a proud graduate of Fairmont State College, earning her degree in Criminal Justice. She dedicated many years of her professional life to the Pruntytown Correctional Center, where through hard work, integrity, and leadership, she rose to the position of Unit Manager. Her career reflected her deep belief in fairness, accountability, and helping others.
A lifelong servant to her community, Brenda’s impact reached far beyond her profession. She devoted countless hours to civic and veterans’ organizations, always striving to make Grafton a stronger and more compassionate place to live. Brenda served eight years on the Grafton City Council, including four years as Vice Mayor, where she worked tirelessly for the betterment of her hometown and its citizens.
Brenda’s heart was especially devoted to honoring veterans and their families. Inspired by her late father, John Nery, a World War II veteran and life member of VFW Post 573 in Clarksburg, she carried forward his legacy with great pride. Brenda was a committed and respected leader within the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, serving as President of both District Three for the Department of West Virginia and the Grafton Memorial City Post 3081 Auxiliary.
Through her leadership in the VFW Auxiliary, Brenda became a strong advocate for veterans, military families, and community outreach programs. She worked closely with the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Home and continually encouraged others to remember the sacrifices made by service members, especially during Memorial Day observances. Her patriotism, kindness, and servant’s heart touched countless lives throughout the state.
In addition to her public service, Brenda was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Club and remained an active member of the Grafton Rotary Club throughout her life. She was also a faithful member of the Church of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, where her faith guided her life of generosity and compassion.
Those who knew Brenda will remember her warm smile, welcoming spirit, strong convictions, and tireless dedication to others. She never met a stranger and made everyone feel valued and appreciated. Her legacy of service, leadership, and love for her community will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know her.
